The hippie subculture
was a youth movement in the USA, formed in the mid 1960s. Hippies opposed Puritan
morality and promoted love and pacifism as the symbols of the natural purity.
One of the most famous hippie slogans is «Make love, not war!»
Hippies tended to
travel light, and could pick up and go at any time. Any Volkswagen bus of
the 1960' and 1970's was called a hippie bus. These buses could also be crazy painted
and decorated.

This
amazing stamp shows the Hamstreet (Kent) map of 1959. The set of four stamps from Bicentenary of the Ordnance Survey issue appeared in 1991.
There were quite a few hippies in the UK as well. The movement carried on into the 70s and heavily influenced the primary pop festival of the UK at Glastonbury. I love your one sentence summary -"Hippies opposed Puritan morality and promoted love and pacifism as the symbols of the natural purity." I would have been hard put to say what they stood for but that sums it up perfectly.
